Hard Times Called for Strong Heroes
Scranton, Pennsylvania, was once a booming industrial powerhouse where coal was king, and the garment and textile industry was one of the largest in the United States. Like many other blue-collar cities in the 1970s and 80s, this once proud city struggled with financial distress, high unemployment, and urban decline.For many of its residents, this period was a very tough time. There was a sense of hopelessness and, for some, a loss of community pride.
